Title: Level Advancement - Office Letter
Post by: Joe.w on April 07, 2013, 06:39:36 PM
I've started work on recreating the office letter movie from the original TH, and this is what I've created so far.
It's quite similar to the original TH in the way the letter is shown, but without a background yet. The original used what looks like a desk, with a large "casebook" on it.

I'd like to continue to improve it, with ideas from the community as to how much we could differ from the original.
Perhaps keeping the envelope and letter, and having different things on the desk?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/0ktwf1zqpjqc1us/CTH%20level%20advance.mov (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0ktwf1zqpjqc1us/CTH%20level%20advance.mov)

Let me know what you think!
Joe.

Nice! :-) I'll think about what to do to make it differ, the original look is very efficient...

To remind us of what the original looked like here is a screenshot

I thought that in place of the Casebook we could have computer screen (Modern looking flatscreen for desk top or even a laptop) with a spreadsheet open on it.

Then inplace of the tablets/pills we could have a tablet computer running CorsixTH (a play on words). I was thinking perhaps a can of Pils lager, but then I remembered that some children might play the game.

I am not too sure what the object is on the left - any ideas?
On the right it looks like a couple of test tubes and a tooth brush or maybe a clothes brush.  Perhaps we could have some DVD's, but instead of being work related they could be for other games (Transport Tycoon for example) and then perhaps a ipod and headphones.

Maybe we should rename the "fax" into "e-mail" too? To make our own twist.

Some great ideas! I'll see what I can come up with over the next few days.
I like the idea of keeping the desk as it was in the original, but with the modern twist as mentioned.

I am not too sure what the object is on the left - any ideas?

I'm pretty sure it's a top down view of a skull, although it is hard to tell with 320x240 video.

Yes, it must be a skull.
Probably from a patient in the research machine!

Maybe we should rename the "fax" into "e-mail" too? To make our own twist.

One idea is then to let the winning letter movie instead show a printer that prints the letter since you got it as an email but want to read it on paper anyway? A hint to the "paperless world" that never happens. :-P

The new fax fullscreen window would then of course be a computer screen instead.

Now you have said it, I can see that is exactly what it is.

In the original it is clearly a letter, has a stamp and is in an envelope.  So am I the only one that think it was strange how the letter appeared one letter at a time as if it was being typed in front of you.  (Almost like a teleprinter)

I am not sure I like the idea of the email or it being printed as that is too similar to the fax we currently have.  I think it is still the custom most times to get a letter for a job offer, but perhaps as it opens up it should be already written and not typed one letter at a time.

You could get a text message, but I can't imagine there being many job offers sent by a text - I could be wrong though.

The new fax fullscreen window would then of course be a computer screen instead.

You mean the in-game fax machine?
The idea of changing the in-game fax machine to a computer is a nice idea, it brings the game into the 21st century. Would it just be as simple as changing the image background? The computers keyboard could then be used to enter the games cheats, as it used to be with the fax machine.

One idea is then to let the winning letter movie instead show a printer that prints the letter since you got it as an email but want to read it on paper anyway?

I think having a printer print out an email would take too long, unless it's really quick. I'm trying to keep the whole animation under about 5 seconds, minus the time it takes to type/display the letter on-screen, which as I understand will be handled by the game along with the tick/cross buttons? Is this correct?

Also, who prints out their emails anyway  :P

So am I the only one that think it was strange how the letter appeared one letter at a time as if it was being typed in front of you.

My guess is that it was a technical limitation. Since the text couldn't be shown as the letter opened, it was typed on when the last frame of the movie was paused, rather than it just appearing in one go.

Joe.

Hello again!

I thought I'd post an an image of what I've been working on this week.
Here is the background to the winning letter animation, the office scene. This image is missing the letter/envelope, but it will appear from behind the computer and open up much the same as the previous video I posted.

It's still very much a work in progress, there are some more adjustments I'd still like to make for the things I'm not yet happy with. (the mouse, for example!)

The work is all my own, but there may be some issues with using TH graphics on the tablet screen. Maybe we'll have to figure out something else for the tablet to show.

Any changes/improvements/suggestions anyone would like made, just mention them here and I'll do my best.

Hope you like it so far.
Joe.

Thanks for the comments MarkL!
Great idea about the tablet, I've changed it to the image you sent in this latest render. It now shows the menu background.
There are more a few changes still to be made, like fading the scene behind the letter to black as was in the original.

The following is a test render and was only rendered in 720p to lower the render times. Let me know the resolution you'd like the final to be in. Ideally 1920x1080p as most monitors have resolutions this high nowadays.

Looks great!
Could you use a different computer screen, though? The iWork doesn't really fit the game-y, non-serious feel of the scene. Perhaps just put the spreadsheet over the whole screen, change the font to Comic Sans and change the colors to feel less professional.
Also, the gray letterhead is very hard to see. Could you make it black?

As for the tablet screen, maybe use a screen from one of the other proposed cut screens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gFHOASPjNbc, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gFHOASPjNbc,) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc0zYkdeyq0. Thanks for the comments Noah! It inspires me to keep working on it, and depending on how it goes... I might... might even have a go at some of the others!

Yes, and thanks for your constructive feedback :)
I've changed a few things with the image, as mentioned below. Do you think the whole thing is a bit to "Apple" overdone? I could change it to a more generic PC if it's an issue.

Changes:
   - Tablet screen changed to Wolter's menu as this will replace the existing one at some point hopefully.
   - Spreadsheet fills computer screen, and looks less professional, more TH.
   - Animation of letter & envelope improved, and background fade to black at the end.
   - CorsixTH logo on the computer screen bezel.
   - CorsixTH logo letterhead darkened, although I think dropbox streaming does something to the colours. Download the file and it'll be how I intended.
   - Sound! There is a paper sound effect, but it needs a "level complete" sort of sound as well. Check out this site for some good ones, of if your up the the challenge, create your own!

I thought the idea was we re-create the cut-scene videos, and (eventually) re-create/improve the games graphics.

Joe.

Looks excellent!

What would you think about putting the CorsixTH screen on the computer and the Hospital Budget on the tablet? Given that the boss is the player, CorsixTH should be his focus, while, in game, hospital finances are confined to the lower left corner.
It might make more sense to use a screen from the level board game [1], as that's the screen that the player is going to see next.

Also, the letter could use a torn edge and a stain or two, given its aged appearance.

That's all nitpicking, of course. :) Keep up the good work!

Hi Everyone,

What would you think about putting the CorsixTH screen on the computer and the Hospital Budget on the tablet?

I see what you mean, but I was going with: The boss/player has work open on the computer (hospital finances) but is actually playing CTH on his/her tablet rather than doing work.

Here's the latest changes.

- Generic keyboard and monitor now instead of an iMac, keeping the windows fans happy ;)
- Two open source games added to the pile in the background, Tux racer and Sintel the game.
- minor modelling improvements, stained edge on the letter (not shown)

Posted below is frame 48 out of 100, and if everyone's happy with it I'll start rendering the animation in final. It'll probably take a few days, but should be done by the end of the week.

Wouldn't an email be even more modern adn efficient? Would be like this:
Player sits in front of the budget screen, an icon pops up, mous moves over, clicks and the promotion mail opens... Time to get away from the old style (not just for rights reasons)!

Nevertheless perfect one. So seems like the game goes 3d in the future!?

I am not sure I like the idea of the email or it being printed as that is too similar to the fax we currently have.
The mod has spoken... :)

It's difficult to include everyones opinions, especially when the work is almost done!
Perhaps post your ideas for a possible opening/attract/lose cutscene if remakes of those get made.

Never mind my opinion!
I read somewhere something about an email animation but couldn't remember if it was a positive or negative post (was late last night). I understood that MarkLs worries about an email are not in general, but just the animation that it is "writen" while you read it is really odd.

I don't want to change the existing scene, it's very good as it is, but still like the email idea - would use it as fax replacement.

There's nothing I can do about that.
The text in the body of the letter is written on by the game dynamically, as it will change based on the players name, language, and the next level.

How the text gets written on will be up to the person who codes this cutscene into the game.

I think what you are doing is fine as it is Joe, it would seem odd in my opinion to get an email offering you a new post and a letter is more traditional for special event like this.

We are only using the fax for this at the moment because of the lack of having a movie.  However, there maybe some people who choose not to run the movies, so a fax or email backup screen would or could be used then (this is mentioned somewhere on google code)

I can't see why we could not replace the screen for the fax machine at some point though and make that a monitor with an email.  This could serve as a more up to date way of informing the player of everyday matters like a new disease or the VIP wants to visit etc.

Hello!

I've finished my animation!
It's now rendered out in full, and includes a "level up" sound loop I found online.
I also found some useful information on file specifications and codecs supported by the game in this post by TheCycoONE.
I'm not sure if you're still around Wolter, but I'm fairly far along in  the process of adding video support to CorsixTH.  I can tell you that to be used in the game the video should be < 30fps, in any format ffmpeg supports (h264, mpeg2, smk, mp4...), and it should be named and cut the same as the level videos in the game except with the appropriate extension.

e.g. for the transition to level 1 call it: AREA01V.MP4, level 2: AREA02V.MP4 and so forth.

If we have your permission to use them, I'm sure other people in the community are willing to slice them and add sound.
There are no restrictions on length or dimensions.  The movie code signals to the game when the movie is finished, and the movie is scaled to the game window but letter-boxed to preserve aspect ratio.  I think 600x800 is a good target, but to be honest I haven't experimented.

The sounds used were bought from pond5.com, royalty free. I don't know if this is a problem, but I couldn't find many good and free sounds elsewhere. I'm not quite sure what you meant about your quote, though. :s

I'll start a new post soon about the "information dialogue" (aka the fax machine) to get some opinions on re-creating it. Perhaps using the same room, computer, keyboard, mouse, etc.

Royalty-free is a problem.
When you buy sounds, you get a license for yourself, but you don't get a license for others. That means you can use a sound in your own project, but you can't relicense the sound under an open-source license or bundle it in open-source software.

If you can't find a good sound, you can just publish the video without sound. Maybe someone will step up and create a sound or find an open-source sound. If not, perhaps CorsixTH can use the sounds from the original game for now, like it does with graphics.

BTW, are all the objects in your video open-source? Are you complying with their license?

Yes. I've sent all three an email
Jon from Sintel the game said "Please do! [use it in-game]"
For Tux racer, I could only find one email address for them which my email failed to send to. It's quite an old game, so they may not be so contactable anymore.
Ingo (planetmaker) from OpenTTD mentioned their name is spelt without a space. Not a problem, just re-rendered those few hundred pixels again, revised link below. He/she also mentioned how far the project has come, and it was quite impressive!
