We will always (I expect) use some files of originalTH, it just may get fewer and fewer, not graphics but still levels, maps, staff, etc.

There's no reason why we can't make our own maps. We can even script new campaign levels. I don't see why we can't create new staff either.

Getting EA to release the source code for Theme Hospital would be a fantastic step in the progress of CorsixTH...

No, I really don't think it would be. The last thing the project needs is to split the community between those who want to update the old code base and those who want to reverse engineer the game. The first route may be faster, but it's more than likely that the code would come with some really stupid conditions (eg. some condition that after 3 years EA gains full control over the code, etc.) Plus, reverse engineering the game is likely to ultimately result in a better code base, among other things.

CorsixTH has no plans to contact EA in this matter or pursue the path to try to get the source code released. The benefit for us is too small (get to know some internal calculations).

My thoughts exactly.

But seriously though, will jackyboyhenry please release the tool you used to extract the game graphics? I've been trying to get soemthing like that work but to no avail :(

Ok, so in the ten mins since I woke up, I've been able to decompress the archives! Extracting them is quite a bit more difficult :/ I've found an extractor that can read the archives and spit out data about how many files are in it, but for one reason or another, it simply won't extract them D:<

Well, shitty :/ Basically, I've figured out that the extraction process is in two steps. First, we need to de-RNC the files (uncompressed). This is the easy part. Then we need to actually extract them. The problem is, the files themselves are split into tiny pieces in the .dat files, and the information on how to re-assemble them is in the .tab files. I found some tools that will do this for Syndicate Wars, but they don't work on TH because they also require a third, .pal file (which includes position information.) So in short, I don't think there are any more tools I can try :/

I'll have to look into the lua stuff.

Also, I found some tools to unpack rnc built for windows. It's the "Bullfrog Utilities" link.

So far, no luck getting useful files out, though I've not tried hard yet (It's pretty late.) I've stumbled across references to other unpacking tools, but I think I'll try emulation (dosbox, etc) before I try them.

I'm going to try to find and extract the sprites and such used in the game. If I manage it, I'll post a how-to. Also, I do a tiny bit of pixel art, so if it seems easy enough, I'll try creating some suitable art (I think... the plants shouldn't be too hard :P) Again, if I make any progress, I'll post in .png.

As a question to the developers, how "original" does the modified files have to be to be compatible with our license? I'm going to assume we'll need to do more than mess with the hue, but would we be infringing if we kept the outline of the original file? Also, can we edit the original file, then save it or would it be better to start completely from scratch?
